Born September 25, 1928, in River Rouge, Michigan.  She was the daughter of Ralph Barber and Mildred Owens.   On April 1, 1945, she married Melvin “Pete” Peterson of Allegany.  They married in Michigan when she was 16 then moved to Allegany.

Helen is survived by her three children: Marquita (Dave) Peterson of Victor, NY, Cindy (Marc) Schell of Clearwater, FL, and Walter “Pete” Peterson of Olean, NY.  Also surviving are 10 grandchildren and19 great grandchildren whom she loved dearly, along with her dear friend Rosanne (Mike) Capra.

She was employed by the Cattaraugus County Nursing Home for many years, and was a member of the Allegany Fireman’s Lady Auxiliary.

Helen lived in Allegany until she moved to Fairport NY in 1994 to be closer to her daughters.

Helen will always be remembered as a caring, loving person. She was always up for a good laugh, she loved to read, watch television especially Dancing with the Stars with her daughter, spend time with her family, and root for the Buffalo Bills.   Helen, or as many know her as, “Grandma Pete”, will be remembered by her unconditional love, her calm demeanor, and her warm and happy ways.  She could keep the best secrets, gave the best hugs, always supportive, non-judgmental and always gave the best advice.  She always put others first and was a friend to all.  She was always there when you needed someone, and she will be missed greatly.

In accordance with Helen’s wishes there will be no services.   Donations may be made to a charity of the donors’ choice, or as Helen would want, do a random act of kindness to others.
