I have such fond memories of Ralph. Just to the south of the Metcalfe Farm, I grew up --being the 2nd daughter of Eleanor & Bob Hill. Growing up, we had such fun times skating on the frozen pond--during the winter months-- on Ward & Katherine's farm. My Mom worked alongside Ralph & Lois--picking the delicious peaches from the fruitful trees. Ralph's wife, Barbara, made my sister, Barbara's, wedding veil for her marriage in May 1965. When I married my husband, Scott, in October 1968, we had Kleinhanz and Bircher (Lois & Ralph) build our brick home--right next to Ward & Katherine's farm house. We still live in this wonderful home, having raised 3 children and currently enjoying our 8 Grandchildren. We also had the pleasure of having Janel & Kris Walker as our neighbors. Scott, myself and our children send our sincere condolences to the Metcalfe Family.

I have so many fond memories of Uncle Ralph, but one stands out the most. I was twelve years old and was invited to go camping in the RV with the family to Algonquin Provincial Park in Canada. It was shortly after my dad moved out, so I guess it was decided I needed cheering up. Everyone was incredibly kind to me, but it was Uncle Ralph who made sure I was having fun. I remember standing on the shore of the lake with him while he gave me lessons on how to dig for clams in the mud of the surf with my feet. He would cheer every time I found one! Spending time with Uncle Ralph and the entire Metcalfe clan that week was a turning point for me. I returned home officially cheered up. (It didn’t hurt that I was kissed for the first time by a family friend. If you’re reading this, you know who you are!) What a blessing it is to have had Uncle Ralph in my life growing up. I will always treasure my memories of him. Love, Betsy
