Betty Marie Fisher

Ontario:  Sunday, September 25, 2016, at the age of 95, Betty went home to heaven. She was predeceased by her husband of 71 years, Allison A. Fisher; son-in-law, Rex Judd; and her five siblings. She is survived by her daughters, Julie (K. Michael) Robertson, Sharon (Don) Bailey, Lori Judd, and Wendy (Jim) Roy; grandsons, Jason and Aaron Roy; sister-in-law, Shirley French; many special nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Betty was born in Hammondsport, NY on July 18, 1921 to the late Florence (Ross) and Leonard French. She was the second of six children. During her childhood, she worked many long hours on her dad's dairy, grape, and potato farm. During her senior year in high school, after her father suffered a serious back injury, she helped manage the farm. In 1938, Betty met the love of her life and future husband, Allison "Al" Fisher, while picking cherries on the Fisher fruit farm in Ontario, NY.  She and Al were married in 1942.  They would raise their four daughters on the farm, and although Betty was a full-time mother, she also helped in picking cherries, grapes, and apples, as well as tying grapes in the spring. When the girls grew older, Betty worked in the Wayne Central School cafeteria for sixteen years.  Betty became an assistant manager there prior to her retirement. In 1988, she and Al moved from the family farm to Centennial Village in Ontario, NY.  Betty was a faithful and active member of Immanuel Congregational United Church of Christ in Ontario, NY.  She served in many capacities including financial secretary, Sunday School teacher, choir member, and Ruth Circle member.  Betty loved to travel and enjoyed many trips over the years with Al including England, Scotland, Wales, Hawaii, Alaska, and the Canadian Rockies.  A favorite vacation destination was the Thousand Islands near Alexandria Bay, NY, where she and her family have vacationed since 1942.  In the late 1980's, she was blessed by the births of her two grandsons, Jason and Aaron, who were the apples of her eye.  Betty was known to her family and friends as a gentle, loving, thoughtful, and generous person.  Her strength, stellar work ethic, and caring approach to life were an inspiration to her family and all who knew her.  She was an exemplary and wonderful mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, wife, and friend.  She was truly cherished and treasured.

There will be no calling hours.  A celebration of Betty's life will be offered at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 1, 2016, at Immanuel Congregational United Church of Christ, 1973 Ridge Road, Ontario, NY.  A reception will immediately follow in the fellowship hall.  Interment will be at Furnaceville Cemetery.  Memorials may be made in honor of Betty to the Church (mailing address:  PO Box 75, Ontario, NY, 14519).  Online condolences may be left at www.murphyfuneralservices.com.
