Scherer, Elaine A.
Palmyra: Passed away, at her home, on Saturday, June 14, 2014 at the age of 74. Elaine was born on September 25, 1939, in Rochester, NY, to Ernestine and Herbert L. Saffran. She was predeceased by her father, Herbert; step-father, Norman Nagel; brother Gary Saffran and grandson Brian K. Schaurer. Survived by her husband of 47 years, Walter "Walt" ; mother, Ernestine Nagel; children, Susan Taylor of Lyons, NY, Sandra Orlopp of Lyons, NY, Ann (Tim) Vollertsen of Palmyra, NY, Deborah (David) Mollenkopf of Ovid, NY and Walter G. Scherer III of Garden City Beach, Florida; 15 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Carol Saffran, many nieces, nephews other family and friends.
Elaine loved spending time at her home. She enjoyed gardening and the many rose bushes she had on the property. She enjoyed the birds that visited and the pet dogs and cats that she and Walt had over the years. She enjoyed fishing and hunting and all of the wildlife that surrounded them. One of her favorite entertainers was Bobby Vinton. Walt told a story about how he and Elaine went to see Bobby Vinton one evening. He told her that Bobby would be coming down and kissing the prettiest girl in the audience. At one point in the show, Bobby stepped down and was heading over towards Elaine. He was abruptly stopped by another fan who jumped at him to give him a hug. Walt states "once he got rid of her, he made his way towards Elaine, sat down to speak with her, and gave her a kiss on the cheek". Elaine asked if Walt had "set that up". Walt made sure she realized that he had not and that she simply was fortunate to have had the experience. Another one of Elaine's pleasures was to visit the Casino. She and Walt traveled all over and had the opportunity to visit many. Included on the list was Atlantic City, NJ. On one such trip, they got a chance to stay at the Taj Mahal. Ended up that they got a huge and beautiful suite. Elaine had brought four rolls of film and ended up using it all on photos of their suite. Walt reflects back on their retirement and how he would say, "lets do it now while we can Elaine". Although all of the aforementioned was important to Elaine, nothing compared to the love she had for her family and especially her grand and great-grandchildren.
