IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Gail Marie
(Schroeder) Adair
May 29, 1944 – April 6, 2016
Gail Marie Adair
Ontario, NY
Passed away in hospital with family by her side on Wednesday, April 6, 2016.
Gail was born on May 29, 1944 in Buffalo, New York to the late Norma M. (Stothers) Schroeder and late Lloyd C. Schroeder. She was pre-deceased by her brother, Kurt Schroeder. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, James T. Adair, daughter Tracy May (Michael Lubes) Adair, son Kevin James (Tamara) Adair, grandchildren Emma M. Lubes, Cody J. Adair, and Ronetas D. Lubes, sister Karen (Arthur) Miller, nieces Susan (Rick) Widman and Lorri (Josh) Norris as well as additional nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and great-great niece and nephews.
Gail graduated from Wyoming Central High School in 1962, and married in 1963. She taught remedial reading in Rochester, NY, from 1970 to 1977. She led the school's gardening club and a local troop of Girl Scouts, and enjoyed taking family trips to camp, fish, or hike.
After moving to Ontario, Gail became active in the local community. She served with the Ontario Chamber of Commerce in various posts for over 20 years until retiring from active leadership in 2011. For over ten years, she managed annual craft shows and the Ontario Summerfest street fair.
Gail was an elected official on the Ontario Town Board from 1990 to 1997, and she spent several years working with the office of the former Assemblyman Bob King.
Gail was especially proud of the work she began in 1989 to improve Route 104 safety. The original two-lane highway was prone to numerous serious traffic accidents. The project spanned more than a decade and required work with town, county and state officials to fund and implement the transformation of Route 104 to a modern, four-lane divided highway with appropriate traffic lights and turn lanes to maximize safety.
Gail was instrumental on the Committee Against the Collider Here (CATCH) which opposed locating the Superconducting Super Collider in Wayne County. This work was recognized by the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in 1994, and 20 years of Museum displays honored CATCH's efforts.
Gail loved to fish on Oneida Lake or Lake Ontario, camp, travel and enjoyed time working outdoors in her garden. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, friend and public servant who will be greatly missed.
Friends may join the family for calling on Sunday, April 17 from noon-3 PM at Murphy Funeral & Cremation Chapels, 1961 Ridge Rd., Ontario, NY, with a memorial service to follow at 3 PM.
