Rochester: Passed into the loving arms of the Lord in the evening of July 21, 2014 at the age of 94. He was born on January 31, 1920 to Edna and Clarence Roberts in Jacksonville Florida. He is predeceased by his parents and wife, Elizabeth "his Betty", of sixty-seven years. He is survived by his daughters, Patricia (Timothy) Johnson and Barbara (Michael) Green; grandchildren, Michele Comery, Thomas (Terri Calabrese) Comery, Carloyn Powers, Timothy Comery, Michael (Wendy) Comery, Danielle (Jan) Johnson, Michael J. Green, Lisa (John) Ebel and Erin (David) Green-Justice; great grandchildren Rachel Smith, Andrea Funk, Garrick Powers, Alana Powers, Raina Comery and Finley Ebel; great-great granddaughter Liliana Smith.
Harry graduated from the Uiversity of Rochester, Phi Beta Kappa. He joined the Emulsion Research Division of the Eastman Kodak Research Laboratories in 1941. Initailly he evaluated the sensitometric characteristics of the experimental silver halide emulsions. Later he was involved in several research programs including the preparation of silver halide emulsions, the development of the gelatin derivative silver halide grain and the design of image transfer systems. He collaborated with Dr. W.G. Lowe on the characteristics of chemical sensitization. This investigation resulted in the understandinf of the difference between sulfur and reduction sensitization. The results of this invetigation were describeed in the well known Lowe, Jones and Roberts paper published in 1951. In 1950, Harry, was appointed assistant to the Director of the Emulsion Research Division and was given the responsibility of organizing a Patent Liaison Office. This office became responsible for coordinating all patent matters relating to silver halide emulsion technology. Harry also became technical advisor to the Kodak Patent Department in regard to this subject matter area. In 1970, he was given the additional responsibility of working with R.W. Graham in designing a computerized informatio retrieval system of photographic patents, called the IMAGE TECHNOLOGY PATENT INFORMATION SYSTEM. The system was subsequently used by the majority of companies manufacturing silver halide photographic products. Harry retired fro Eastman Kodak Company in 1982. At the time, he was aquainted with most of the world's leading photographic scientists. Harry became an adjunct professor at RIT for a period of five years following his retiremnet. In 1988 he ws asked to be co-chairman of the International East-West Symposium II, relating to factors influencing the efficiency of photographic imaging. In 2000 he published a book on silver halide technology titled "From Kodachrome to Instant Color".
Harry enjoyed playing golf and bridge and an occasional glass of Bordeaux while overlooking the lake. He was an avid reader. Harry would recite philosophy and everything in between. he will be remembered for his timeless wisdom and timely witticisms that he shared. he loved his family and friends and will be remembered for treating them well. He loved life and lived it well.
There will be no prior visitation. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, July 26, 2014 at 9AM in the Sacred Heart Catherdral, 296 Flower City Park, Rochester. Entombment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials in memory of Harry may be made to teh Alzheimer's Association or Catholic Charities.
