IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Henry O.
Dewberry, Jr.
July 17, 1936 – December 18, 2025
Just days before Henry Dewberry's journey to be with the Lord, he was sitting in his favorite recliner singing a hymn of faith, "It is well with my soul." It's a song that defined his life, his work and his spirit until his last days.
It was in 2011 when Henry first began to notice the characteristic symptoms of the illness that would make life profoundly more difficult, Parkinson's Disease Dementia. But while the illness eventually robbed him of much of his memory, it could not steal his abiding faith in God, a faith that sustained him throughout his 14-year battle with the disease.
And at 11:50 am on December 18th,2025 at the age of 89, Henry went home to be with God, an award well deserved after a life of hard work.
A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, January 3, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church located at 6602 FM 442 Boling, TX. A viewing will be held before the service at 10:00 a.m.
Henry was born July 17th, 1936, in Frankston, TX to Minnie Lee Henderson and Henry Dewberry Sr. At 15 years old he began working to help support his family, and he never shunned a hard day's work. He worked at a number of jobs including meat packing plants, Purina Mills and Durham Transportation, all while running his own business, Dewberry Appliance Service. He'd spend long evenings at his shop repairing washers and dryers at the end of his workday.
But Henry was most proud of his work in the church. He served the Lord at Greater St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church for more than three decades, much of which as chair of the Deacon Board. He and his wife of 40 years, Mamie Dewberry sang in the choir, visited the sick, and volunteered for Meals on Wheels. He later served as a deacon at Rising Star Baptist church led by Rev. Hiawatha Culver. And in 2017, he and Mamie moved to Rochester, NY with their daughter, Deanna, where they attended Mt. Olivet Baptist church led by Rev. Dr. Rickey Harvey.
He was preceded in death by his parents as well as his siblings, A.C Miller, Roland Bell and Norman Bell. Also preceding him in death are his daughter, Janett Dewberry Bridges, and grandson Johnny Taylor.
Left to cherish his memory are his sisters Mary Phillips and Jeanette Bell Ervin (James); his children, Jonita Taylor, Bridgett Dewberry, Henry Dewberry III, Deanna Dewberry Mitchell (Gary) and Lester Dewberry, as well as a host of grandchildren including Syreeta Taylor, Temesha McGraw, Amie Dewberry, Kinze Dewberry, Shyna Bridges, Lyric Menefee, Twayene Jones, Ethan Mitchell, Narajah Mackenzie Mitchell and Kavion Maxwell Mitchell. Also cherishing his memory are a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews, and great grandchildren.
In the words of his favorite hymn:
When peace like a river, attendeth my way
When sorrows like sea billows roll
Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say
It is well, it is well, with my soul.
Well done, Henry Dewberry, thou good and faithful servant.
