Jan R. Leaty
Williamson: Jan passed away suddenly on April 12, 2018 at age 81. He was born in Rochester, NY to the late Elwin and Eleanor Leaty. Jan is also predeceased by his brother, Daniel Leaty. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Shirley Leaty; children, Mary Jane (Butch) Bills, Jan (Julie) Leaty, Stephen (Debbie) Leaty and Laura Leaty; grandchildren, Michael, Shannon, Stephen, Michelle, Alicia, Ashley, Abby and Katie; great grandchildren, Alyssa, Austin, Emani, LJ, Ella, Leaha, Landon and Ryker; sister and brother-in-law, Nancy (Dan) Brown and family; several nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Jan was a lifelong resident of Williamson, NY. He graduated from Alfred State College with a degree in Business. Fresh out of school, Jan owned and operated his own garden center known as "Old Ridge Garden Center." He was plant superintendent at Curtis Burns in Alton, NY for 20 years, until he started his own auto body parts shop known as "The Tin Man." Jan was a very sociable person who made many friends both at and outside of work. He loved traveling with his wife, Shirley in their motor home exploring the country and making many friends along the way. Along with his sons and grandchildren, Jan was heavily involved with the local auto racing scene. He enjoyed working on cars, the excitement, and comradery of racing. Jan was also involved with his community as one of the founders of Ontario Ambulance, along with Ed Tobin. He was a long-time member and past president of Ontario Rotary. Jan will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
Services will be held privately. There will be a celebration of Jan's life on Sunday (May 6) from 2-5 PM at the Webster-Fairport Elks Lodge, 1066 Jackson Road, Webster, NY 14580. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Jan's memory may be directed to Ontario Volunteer Emergency Squad, PO Box 444, Ontario, NY 14519 or to the Humane Society of Wayne County, 1475 County House Rd., Lyons, NY 14489.
