Obituary

Neal Northrup, 87, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 26, 2024, after a brief illness. His funeral service will be held Monday, June 3, 2024, at St. Joseph's Church, 43 Gebhardt Road, Penfield, NY at 10:00am. For those not able to be in attendance, the Mass will be streamed live at St. Joseph's Church of Penfield .  The service will be followed by visitation with family, coffee and donuts (lemon donuts of course, Neal's favorite!). All are welcome and encouraged to share their memories of Neal with his family.

Neal was born June 16, 1936, in Rochester, New York. He is preceded in death by his parents, Norman and Audrey Northrup, and his sister Kathleen.

He is survived by his wife Cynthia "Cindy" (Mort); daughters, Nancy, Karen (Shel), and Diane (Keith); grandchildren, Alex (Hannah), Eric, Ian, Bailey, Jack, and Katie; four bonus grandchildren, Samantha, Caitlyn, Charles, and Steven Barker; and his great-granddaughter Isabella "Bella".

Neal was raised in Rochester, graduated from Monroe High School, and attended General Motors Institute (GMI). Neal married his high school sweetheart, Cindy, in 1959 and raised his daughters in Penfield, NY. Neal had a successful career as a mechanical engineer at Xerox for 31 years prior to retiring and building his dream home in Shallotte, North Carolina. Neal and Cindy recently relocated back to the Rochester area after living for 30 years in North Carolina.

Neal was known for his commitment to service and volunteerism. Throughout his life, he spent countless hours contributing to the safety and comfort of others (especially his family). He worked the Wednesday overnight shift at Penfield Volunteer Emergency Ambulance (PVEA) for 20 years.

Neal volunteered at the LPGA in Rochester for 31 years, traveling from North Carolina to continue his participation. He worked on the tournament transportation team and shared numerous funny stories about golf pros. He took great pride in the precision organization he created to be sure all were delivered on time to their starting tees.

Once relocated to NC, Neal became involved with the Ocean Isle Beach Fire Department (OIBFD). Initially he was part of the firefighting/rescue team and as he got older, he continued to assist with truck maintenance on a weekly basis. He volunteered at OIBFD for 30 years. Neal also ushered at St. Brendan's Catholic Church in Shallotte, NC for 25 years. In addition to these efforts, the family recalls endless times when Neal stopped to assist in an accident, evacuated a wrecked train, built a homecoming float, served as first aid person for a Girl Scout camping trip, and extricated those pesky slivers picked up on the dock at the 4th Lake cottage in the Adirondacks, among a million other things.

Neal was a generous and kind man who touched the lives of many. He will be remembered for his sarcastic wit and steadfast commitment to his family.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers a donation to the Penfield Volunteer Emergency Ambulance Service, Inc. , 1585 Jackson Road, Penfield, NY 14526, be made in his memory.
