Richard passed away peacefully with family by his side on May 27, 2026, at age 85. He was predeceased by his wife, Sandra and his parents, Arthur and Pauline Schaefer.

Richard is survived by his children, Jay (Lisa) Schaefer and Jill (Tim) Miles; grandchildren, Andrew (Emalie) Schaefer, Chad (Alex Marie) Schaefer, and Zackary Miles; great grandchildren, Addelyn, Aden, Charles, Marlayna, and James; brothers, Ronald (June) Schaefer and Norman (Carol) Schaefer; and sister, Linda Stebbins.

Richard lived a rich and fulfilling life, where he shared his passions and talents with those around him. Richard was an avid pilot, regularly flying his Taylorcraft, and he was a proud member of the Quiet Birdmen, which was a testament to his dedication and love for flying. His love for aviation was matched by his enthusiasm for restoring John Deere tractors, an endeavor that showcased his remarkable mechanical skills. Richard had a unique ability to fix anything that came his way and was so mechanically gifted. He was also passionate about trains and railcars and loved traveling across the Northeast for speeder excursions. Above all, Richard cherished his time with family.

Richard will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of his family and in the skies he so dearly loved.

Services for Richard will be private.
