Ontario: Passed on to a peaceful, restful, place, on Sunday, August 2, 2015, with his family by his side at the age of 87. Russel was born on July 15, 1928 to the late Clarence and Ethel "Dickenson" Fernaays. He was predeceased by his first wife, Marjorie, in 1988 and his daughter, Jane, in 2011; brothers Ralph and Howard Fernaays; sisters, Ruth Peiters and Shirley Hergert and his wife Barbara's 18 month old grandchild John Paul "Baby Jack" Lyons. He is survived by his wife, of twenty five years, Barbara Lyons Fernaays; children, Michele Fernaays, Dennis (Kathy) Fernaays, Karen (John) Hounslea, Rory (Kathy) Fernaays, Kevin Fernaays, Mary (Tom Koscielski) Fernaays; grandchildren, Carrie Stubbings, Aaron (Abby) Fernaays, Ethan (Jennifer) Fernaays, Elizabeth (Travis Bradley) Yockel, Zebulon Hounslea, Megan Hounslea, Matthew (Lacey) Fernaays, Jackie Fernaays and Kelly Fernaays; great grandchildren, Emillie Hanson, Aiden Fernaays, Gracie Fernaays, Riley Fernaays, Owen Fernaays, Natalie Fernaays, Kaitlin Fernaays and Hannah Fernaays; siblings, Nan (Issac) DeWispelaere, June Elich, Arlene (Rudy) Youngman and Donald (Janet) Fernaays; sister-in-law Lillian Galvin; wife Barbara's family including her children Edward (Jill) Lyons, David (Margaret) Lyons, Christine (John) Castro and Charlene (Edwin Feliu) Abretske; seven grandchildren Michael (Rebecca) Hurrin, Aileen Lyons, Anna Lyons, Christopher "CJ" Lyons, Nate Lyons, Jessica Lyons and Brendan Lyons ; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Russel served his country from 1946-1947 through the United States Marine Corps. He worked for the Eastman Kodak Corporation for many years. He was a member of the Lincoln Fire Department. Russel was a member of St. Mary's of the Lake Catholic Church in Ontario where he served as a church usher, eucharistic minister and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Russel was good at fixing things and at one point he spent some time building a home with Habitat for Humanity. He also enjoyed his garden. Russel had a large family and he will be missed by all who loved him.
All are invited to gather for a time of visitation on Thursday, August 6, from 5-8PM at Murphy Funeral & Cremation Chapel, 1961 Ridge Road, Ontario, NY 14519. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, August 7, at 10AM at St. Mary's of the Lake Catholic Church, Walworth Road, Ontario, NY 14519. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Church's Martha Ministry, or the House of Mercy, 725 Hudson Ave., Rochester, NY 14621. Masses in memory of Russel are welcome.
