Ontario, NY. Shirley Ruth (Schruers) Cataldo, 92, died peacefully in her home surrounded by family on August 20, 2023.

She was predeceased by her sister Jean, a nephew David, and an infant daughter, Margaret Grace.

Shirley is survived by her husband, George, of 71 years; children Laura, Sandra (Stavros) Astrinidis, Mark, and Julie; grandchildren Beth (Dennis) den Hollander, Sam Astrinidis, Stephan (Sindy) Astrinidis, Hannah Jane; great-grandchildren Apostolos, Abigail, Anna, Enoch, George, and Lydia, as well as two nephews and a niece.

Shirley grew up in Clymer, NY and attended Houghton College and Buffalo State University, earning a teaching degree. She taught kindergarten at the Ontario Primary School for over 20 years, taking sincere pleasure in her students. Upon retiring, she conquered her fear of flying, enabling her and George to travel extensively domestically and abroad. She and George also square danced for many years. Shirley was active in her church and delighted in outings with her family and friends. She liked playing cards, dominoes, word games, and eating ice cream. She wrote and shared poetry that celebrated the gifts of her friends. Teaching herself the mountain dulcimer, she brought music to others. She was famous for her raspberry jam. Shirley also enjoyed making and selling gemstone jewelry.

She volunteered with Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS), Birthright of Ontario, and the Pines of Peace, Inc., where she interviewed volunteers during its beginnings.

Daughter Sandra lovingly cared for Shirley during her final days. The family would like to thank Andrea, Viki, and Shelly, who provided care over the past couple of years.

Interment will be private. Calling hours will be 4-7 p.m., Thursday, August 24, and a Memorial Service will be Friday, August 25 at 2 p.m. Both will be held at the Living Word Assembly of God, 2344 Ridge Rd, Ontario, NY 14519.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Shirley's memory may be offered to the First Baptist Church of Ontario, the Pines of Peace, Inc. , or Birthright of Ontario .
