Obituary

Stanley Joseph Metro   "Stan"

Fairport, NY/Kulpmont, PA:  Passed away peacefully, on Friday, April 26, 2024, surrounded by his family at the age of 87.  Stan was born on Wednesday, August 19, 1936 in Kulpmont, PA where he lived most of his life.  He was predeceased by his mother, Christina "Bozza" Metro in 2002.  He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Barbara; three children, Susan (Chris) Bauer, Brooke (Jim Garvey) Metro, and Scott (Diana) Metro; stepdaughter, Susan (Tim) Andres; 8 grand and step-grandchildren; former spouse, and friend, Anne Propst; special friend, "Max", the cat, and several friends from the hosey in Kulpmont, PA.

Stan grew up in Kulpmont, PA and was a 1954 graduate of Kulpmont High School.  Stan served our country through the United States Army that included a tour in Germany.  Following his honorable discharge from the Army, Stan made his way to New York City and began a career with IBM in 1960.  Anyone who knows Stan, knows the Big Apple can't hold a candle to the Pennsylvania coal region.  Stan convinced IBM to transfer him to the Keystone State, where he worked his way up the ranks at IBM.  He became a senior technician and district manager, and was accountable for helping repair, and maintain, some of the companies most critical inventions.  This included the Selectric typewriter, the IBM PC and Stan would wind down his career helping the company begin its journey into computer data centers.

While making a service call for one of the IBM machines, Stan met Barbara and the two would marry a few years later on December 15, 1977. The two started out together in Kulpmont, PA and would also live in Bear Gap, Elysburg and most recently in Fairport, NY close to his stepdaughter and husband. Over the years, they enjoyed visits to the Philadelphia area, Upstate, NY, Massachusetts and Connecticut to visit their children and grandchildren.  Dunedin, Florida was a destination the two enjoyed visiting together. Stan was an outdoorsman.  He owned, and enjoyed, many types of motorcycles, snowmobiles, cars and trucks.  For over sixty years he would head out to the woods during deer and turkey seasons.  One of his trophy bucks is mounted and currently, on the wall, exhibited at the Kulpmont Sportsmen Association!  Stan had a great ear for music.  While never formerly trained, he could play just about any polka request on his beloved accordion, or electronic keyboard.  Stan was loved, and although he will be missed, he will live on through the stories shared by family and friends for years to come.

Services for Stan will be private with burial back in his "favorite place in the world" Kulpmont, PA.  In lieu of flowers, or donations, the family suggests toasting Stan with a beer at the "hosey" near you as that would be Stan's wish.  To leave a condolence, please visit the tribute wall on Stan's obituary at www.murphyfuneralservices.com.
