Trautman, William Arthur

Sandwich, MA/ Palmyra, NY: Passed away on May 23, 2014 at his home overlooking Shawme Pond in Sandwich, Massachusetts. William was born on July 21, 1928 to former Palmyra Mayor and Garlock Industries executive Arthur Dewey Trautman and, his wife, school teacher  Doris Chapman Cator.  His mother having passed away in 1958 and his father marrying Wilhelmina "Minnie" Doty Miller in 1962. Prior to retiring to Cape Cod, William resided for nearly 50 years in Manhattan.

William was a 1946 graduate of Palmyra Classical High School and a 1950 graduate of Cornell University's school of architecture.  He served his country through the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. William would go on to graduate from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design in 1954. He worked for Shepley, Bulfinch, Richardson & Abbott in Boston, MA and Carson, Lundin & Shaw Architects and Irving Trust in NYC.

William actively encouraged the preservation of the Palmyra Main Street business district and avidly supported Historic Palmyra, Inc.

William is survived by his many family members including Edward B. Morgan of Sandwich, MA, Barbara Church Stern of France, Allyn V. Cator and his daughter Cheryl both of East Palmyra, Gregory T. Rolland of Easthampton, MA, Sharyl Brown Switzer of Ontario, NY, Pamela Brown Akerley of Avon, NY, Michael H. Bastian of Lyons, NY along with other beloved friends and relatives including admired friend Dr. Agnes E. Griffith of Palmyra, NY.

A graveside service was held on Friday, October 24, 2014 at 11AM at the Palmyra Cemetery.  Online condolences may be left at www.murphyfuneralservices.com.
