Eugene Louis VerSchneider, 92, of Williamson, NY went home to be with the Lord on January 11, 2023.
Born in Carthage, NY, Gene was predeceased by his parents Lawrence and Nellie (Pate) VerSchneider, his beloved wife Caroline (Andre), son Mark Thomas, and his siblings: Claire (Jim) Hayes, Neil, William; sister-in-law, Jeannie VerSchneider; brothers-in-law: Daryl Sullivan, Jack (Fern) Andre, Jim (Theresa) Andre, Ken (Ann) Andre, and Tommy Andre. He is survived by his brother Jack, sisters-in-law: MaryAnn Sullivan and Eleanor VerSchneider; brothers-in-law: Joseph (Carol) Andre and Mike (Donna) Andre; children: Michael (Maureen), Susan, Kate (Jerry) Moran, Pat (Melissa), Karl (UnJoo) and grandchildren: Kimberly (Alonzo), Edward, Tara (Peter), Brit (Ray), Victoria (Cameron), Julie, Gerard, David, Becca, Elise (Stuart), Thomas, and Jonathan; 5 great-grandchildren, extended family and friends.
Gene had a quick wit and loved to laugh. He treasured time with family and friends. He enjoyed family gatherings including family reunions, trips to the Outer Banks in NC, Florida, Virginia, Hawaii and other destinations. He was a devoted Buffalo Bills' football fan.
Gene attended elementary and high school at Lowville Academy in Lowville, NY where he was on the football team. He attended business school at the Utica School of Commerce in Utica, NY. He worked at Griffith and Hagen Investment Company in Utica, NY. He was a dedicated serviceman and veteran of the U.S. Army. He served at Fort Drum, NY for four years as a Military Policeman during the Korean War.
Gene met the love of his life, Caroline, at a local dance and married her in 1954 at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Croghan, NY. They bought a house in Lowville, NY and raised their 5 children there.
Gene and Caroline owned and operated Ver's Restaurant in Lowville, NY for 17 years where they enjoyed providing hospitality to the community. He worked at and retired from the New York State Insurance Fund, Rochester, NY after many years of service.
Gene's faith was very important to him. Throughout his life, he was active in serving his community. He served at St. Mary's of the Lake Church in Ontario, NY in the Pre-Marriage Counseling, Eucharistic Minister and Social Ministries; at the Knights of Columbus where he was a 4th degree knight; at Holy Trinity Church in Webster, NY; and supported the Silver Wheels Wheelchair Football Team founded by the late Pat Rowe.
Gene leaves a rich legacy of service, hospitality, kindness, inspiration, humor, love and faith with all of us.
Family and friends may gather for visitation from 2-5 PM on Sunday, January 15, at Murphy Funeral & Cremation Chapels, 1961 Ridge Rd., Ontario, NY 14519.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, January 16, 10 AM at Holy Trinity Church, 1460 Ridge Rd.,Webster, NY 14580.
Gene will be laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery (St. Mary's of the Lake Church), Ontario, NY.
