Mary Bartl
(Sanzotta)
Ontario: March 6, 2020 at age 92, left us peacefully while she slept. Mary was born April 8, 1927 in Rochester NY to Dominick and Josephine Sanzotta. She was raised in Red Creek, NY until she graduated high school in 1946. She is pre-deceased by husband Charles of 61 years; her parents; brothers Nicholas (Grace), Vincent (Ann), Carmelo (Dorothy), Hank; and sisters Judy (Harold), Elizabeth (Everett) and Rose. She is survived by her loving family; daughter Edna (Scott) Orbaker of Sodus, NY; son Rick Bartl of Memphis, TN; grandchildren Victor (Jaimi) Bernardi; Zulma Bernardi and Ashira Bernardi (Brad Cameron); nine great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Alex, Yaiza, Jose, Zachary, Izac, Maillia, Sophia, Dominic; devoted sister, Teresa (Bruce) Shultz; sister-in-law, Alice Sanzotta; brother-in-law Dean Hartman. And many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors.
Mary moved to Sodus, NY to become a switchboard operator for New York Telephone (1946), ran off to Florida to escape the NY cold, then returned to Rochester to work for Bonds Clothing (1948), met her future husband Chuck at a Halloween party, went back to Florida (but couldn’t get Chuck out of her mind) and then ended up back in Rochester permanently. She worked at Stromberg-Carlson for just 6 weeks (not her cup of tea) and was quickly hired at Eastman Kodak (1950) where she was a timekeeper for 10 years. She and Chuck married on Halloween 1953 and kept each other company for 61 years. They moved to Ontario in 1959 where they spent the rest of their lives.
Always the entrepreneur, she left Kodak after she had kids and started selling baskets and candy out of her house. She then opened a souvenir shop in Sodus Point which she ran for 12 summers (her favorite times) and then started Ontario Fashions & Boutique apparel shop for 8 successful years. The last phase of her career began in 1983 in real estate for Nothnagle (formerly Johncox) Realty in Ontario selling homes for 14 years.
She loved to travel, the beach, cooking, golf, her garden and word puzzles. She hated snakes and asparagus. Her best days were spent with family and friends. Her salad dressing was out-of-this-world amazing. During her later years, she volunteered for Pines of Peace and the Sodus Bay Lighthouse Museum. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother, a dedicated and doting grandparent and a loyal, fun-loving friend. Her sweet embrace will be missed by many and she will be forever loved.
