David's parents brought me into their family as a foster care child when I was two years old, four years younger than David. He has been my brother for 72 years. His surviving sister Claire's brother for 78 years. And so our memories predate the fullness of David's life in his own family and the celebration of grandchildren.
Our parents were devout Catholics, and our father who went to daily mass was active in St Joseph's Church in our hometown of Wakefield, Massachusetts up to the end of his life. It is not surprising to me that David was active in his own parish to the end of his life.
As for my own life, when our mother died David became in the best sense of the term his brother's keeper. At 18 he joined the navy, and my fondest memories were of him home on leave, when I would listen to his stories and help iron his uniforms, On a big naval carrier he learned to play pingpong well and taught me in the basement of our house, which barely had room for the table let alone the players.
David's hometown buddies were always around to play, and I was always around with them. After the navy David went to Northeastern University in Boston, along with his hometown friends. They would study together at one or the other's house. I was hanging around them when they were doing that too.
And we all loved to hack our way around the local golf courses--me, David, Allen Wilkins, Bucko Curran, David Pinckney. I don't know where they are now, but I know where I was then.

My friend Dave Sliney was a good man. I served alongside him as a lector at St. Patrick's Church for many years. I watched him serve his constituents in Macedon with integrity and selflessness for many years as well. We have a lost a good one. Godspeed, Dave.

Message from William Murray, Mayor for the Village of Macedon

So sad to see this man gone. While we didn't always see eye to eye on village issues, he always trusted me to make the decision and backed me regardless of his view. This is someone I highly respected and was proud to call a friend. Now I'm sure you and Elaine are enjoying your time together once again.
Rest in peace Dave, you will be missed.
