Hanmer, David W.

Farmington, NY:  Passed away on Wednesday, December 30, 2015 at the age of 81.  Dave was born on March 21, 1934 in Ithaca, NY, to the late George and Helen Miller Hanmer; and is survived by his wife of 45 years, Fairlyn; daughter, Tracey (Nathan) Hanmer-Karl; son, Steven (Deborah) Hanmer; grandsons, Marcus and James Hanmer; sisters, Doris Humulock and Carol (William) Shipe; nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Dave, a devoted husband, loving father, brother, grandfather, and close friend to many ended his long battle with Alzheimer’s with the same strength and courage with which he lived his life. Dave grew up one of three children and served his country proudly through the United States Army, stationed at Fort Campbell, during the Korean War.  He graduated from Buffalo State with his bachelor’s degree and then went on to the University of Buffalo to receive his master’s degree.  Early in his career, he taught Industrial Arts, before spending 33 years as a guidance counselor with the Fairport Central School District.  Dave had a passion for assisting young people; encouraging them to become independent thinkers and problem solvers. His family recalls how many of his students would stop, when they saw him years later and share the impact that he had on their lives and how much they appreciated him.

Dave was a true outdoorsman-enjoying camping, hunting, fishing, golfing, hiking and sailing. Dave instilled in his own children a sense of adventure and love for the outdoors that he believed would lead to a positive and enthusiastic attitude. Dave was a great teacher, inside and outside of the classroom, who will be dearly missed and remembered fondly by many.

Services for Dave will be held privately.  Memorials may be made in his honor to Alzheimer’s Association, Rochester and Finger Lakes Region, 435 East Henrietta Road, Rochester, NY 14620; The Rochester Presbyterian Home, 256 Thurston Road, Rochester, NY 14619; or to the  University of Rochester Memory Care Program, 919 Westfall Road, Bldg. C, Suite 210, Rochester, NY 14618.  Online condolences may be left at www.murphyfuneralservices.com.
